There was a time when I would readily agree that I lived to eat. That is when I was young and probably didn’t know any better. I was voracious eater and had no scruples about what I eat. Andrew Zimmern’s mantra, from Bizarre Foods, if it looks good eat it had long been found and established on me.
I continued that life style until I was bowled by prostate cancer. Today I return to the scene of the crime, my innermost self, and concluded: I was dumb and stupid.
The Dangers Of Eating
As a recovered man I must say that all eating should have clear and present benefit instead of the flip side of clear and present danger. Even a Koala bear eating from its mother’s anus, as strange as it seems, has benefits. The benefits are those of a particular bacteria in the poop of the mother that is essential for the breakdown of the tree that they feed on which is absent from the stomach of the young. So the young has to have this disgusting diet to enable the growth of these bacteria in its stomach to enable him to eat this tree, and thus not starve to death. This creature certainly eats to live.
There are many other nature stories that underscore the fact that most animals eat to live whether it is regurgitated from the mouth in slimy forms or in the case of the Koala, excreted from the posterior end. Unless they are omnivorous they usually stick to their diet too and do not preserve food except by that which is allowed by nature. It is also interesting to note that seed eaters are never carrion eaters etc. and would be careful to avoid that which they know is not good for them. Likewise carrion eaters may not eat seeds and avoid it.
Isn’t it interesting that animals of the lower order seem to be cognizant of the dangers of eating?
Coming now to the higher animals of which we are; the Homo Sapiens classification, how incredible it is that we are the most unscrupulous eaters and that for the most part we would eat anything presented to us as food without stopping to examine it.
In the commoditization and industrialization of foods we have realized big businesses and lascivious lifestyles of a few, for the unnaturilization and associated maladies of cancers, diabetes you name it, for the many hapless ones.
I continue to mention Andrew Zimmern here as the king of so called BIZARRE FOODS. However in closer examination he eats indigenous foods from nature and usually from the sea, out of the ground, from trees and so forth. He usually comments how the food taste like the things they eat, down to the swamp rat that tastes like the swamp. His counterpart Anthony Bourdain has traveled the world eating more of what you could call upscale stuff, and of course drinking wine and beers and assortment of booze. But it should be noted that except for the wines nothing is bottled or preserved in Bourdain’s eating excursions. Bourdain of NO RESERVATION has up-scaled himself by this type of eating, and I must say scrupulous eating, to the now renowned CNN’s piece: PARTS UNKNOWN.
Because of the specialties in eating of these infamous foodies, it is easily concluded that they eat to live and not live to eat. It has become fun and enjoyment to them and as Bourdain has been noted to say, he cannot believe that this fine lifestyle is happening to him, a former addict.
Whether it is Bourdain or Zimmern their foods on these shows are usually some wild stuff or those grown and produced as organically as they could come. It is no wonder that they can continue to do this, as these foods are without growth enhancers and poison preservatives. I guarantee that these men will last forever and in good health too, compared to other food channel unscrupulous eaters of hamburgers and 70oz. steaks.
Isn’t it true that most people who are healthy today are those who eat to live? Isn’t it true that those are the people who shy away from things that are labeled and stored in jars and tins? Isn’t it true that those people are the people who would buy less of things that are better for you than to stock up with fridge full of cheap meats and pantry full of false food? Isn’t it true that most people who are healthy today are those who are not looking for a belly full, but for satisfaction? They know for sure that less is more (of the good foods) and more is less (of the bad foods).
And so I came to have regrets as a voracious eater of an indiscriminate manner. In a true sense I was a human garbage disposal, gobbling up everything as food and for food. Somehow I thought a good appetite and big eatings were the signs of a healthy man. At this stage I was eating mainly American city foods having totally abrogated my indigenous lifestyle of healthy natural eating. Thus the writings were seriously on the wall for me but the wool of taste good and cheap abundance had covered my eyes.
Prostate Cancer And Me…
Should I have been surprised of being diagnosed with prostate cancer then? No I shouldn’t…but I was. I was forty seven years old then. So returning to the scene of the crime I have to say I used to live to eat…how dumb and stupid that was.
Today I survive prostate cancer and continue to have the temerity to talk about it in this form and others, to warn those who might take heed. My full story is documented in Prostate Cancer and Me…Or You, The Two Stages (Man To Man). This book is accompanied by Its On Now and The face of Faces which are volumes of poetry to help you see where I have been and where I am going. They are available at Amazon.com by clicking this link: Amazon Author Central.
I would love for every man not to have prostate cancer, this emasculating disease of your reproductive glands. It has left a hole in my soul of those who have not survived it and I emphasize with the families of those left behind. I know of too many of these situations personally.
My message continues to be that prostate cancer is avoidable if you take charge of your life style in view of good health. Eat healthy foods grown with dirt and from the soil, fish from the ocean, fruits from trees. For emphasis your foods should not have been grown with steroids, growth hormones, antibiotics, insecticides and pesticides. Drink uncontaminated water, and visit your doctor once every twelve months.
Until no residents will say I am sick (Isaiah 33:24) do these simple things for good health. Until next time walk good and pack light.
