The lady, who bagged me, came home from work the other day and said to me “Did you know that some news from a non-doctor group said that PSA screening is not recommended and does more harm than good?”
Was I supposed to raise an eyebrow about that statement? No!
I had heard that before. It was a statement of contradiction that I had long since raised with my able Urologist, Dr. Jamison Jaffe, top doc of Southeastern Pennsylvania. He had conceded that it may not be perfect, but that it was the best we have to detect and treat problems of the prostate including cancer. So the understanding was that PSA tests (Prostate Specific Antigen)screens for a substance secreted into the blood by dysfunctioning prostate gland. The measurement of the level of that substance then became the benchmark for treatments of the gland. This early signaling therefore, was the effective method by which treatment and prevention of the spreading of the disease presents an optimistic crossroad for both doctor and patient.
That was good enough for me coming from this esteemed Urologist. And it makes good sense too. Can you imagine a seafaring vessel without a well develop sonar, or dolphins without echo location? The seafaring vessel could run aground or hit the peak of an ocean- growing mountain. The dolphins will fare no better as they could starve or couldn’t communicate. Very bleak situations to say the least!
Yes it makes so much sense to me as prostate cancer is like that mountain in the ocean that you will not see until the island pops up. For emphasis, PSA once again is a substance produced only by the prostate gland and secreted in the blood. A simple blood test can detect and monitor the increase of this substance thus blowing the whistle on this deadly stealth disease. So a method to early detect and move it from your system makes so much sense to me. It fundamentally makes more sense to me as such method and practice saved my life…
So when my wife came home and mentioned that, it rang an annoying bell in my head and at best sounded like an unturned Reggae band. Should I say it grabbed my attention in a rather gruff and unpleasant way? Yes it did! Should I also say it made me mad? Yes it did. That being the case I couldn’t stay at home while the freedom fighters are fighting but had to join the war for better health once more with this piece. I could not even say seeds of doubts were planted as a result of this information from the lady that bagged me (my wife). In fact to the contrary what was planted in my head was that something sinister was afoot and needed my voice as a benefactor of PSA screening.
Here is the case at hand folks. And judge for yourselves and conclude accordingly!
A government panel has recommended that PSA screening for prostate cancer be stopped. This government panel which wears the banner the US Preventative Service Task Force (USPSTF) claims they have concluded an extensive study and their findings are all out there to see. Please note that this body is a not a body of doctors but a task force. The question is, if it is desirable to know the depth of the sea which fish would you believe that said it is deep, the one that comes from the bottom, or the one who lives on the reef?
It becomes a matter of common prudence then to listen to and be advised by the people who are up in their necks in fighting this disease. It was under these circumstances that I appeal to LUGPA (Large Urology Group Practice Association).
This group representing more than 1,800 Urologists, have totally discredited this findings, calling it bias among other things. In a news release dated May 21, 2012 for immediate release, Dr. Deepak A. Kapoor, President of LUGPA and chairman and CEO of Integrated Medical Professionals, PLLC is quoted as saying that “ Failing to detect cancer early will create a public health catastrophe in 5-10 years”. He went on to say that “USPSTF clearly ‘cherry-picked’ data to support what can only be viewed as a preconceived bias against screening. The task force did not include any physician who treats prostate cancer, and ignored credible studies and epidemiological data demonstrating a significant survival advantage to early detection…we are not detecting more cancer, we are detecting cancer earlier and saving lives”. The doctor went on to charge this downgrade of PSA to ‘D’ by USPSTF as irresponsible and inexplicable and it will deny those mostly at risk, African American and THOSE WITH FAMILY HISTORY of this very well needed measure.
LUGPA has now joined forces with American Urological Association (AUA) and the American Association of Clinical Urologists (AACU) in support of PSA Screening. They have concluded that this USPSTF’s recommendations, risks undoing 20 years of progress in patient education and puts the lives of tens of thousands of men at risk.
As far back as 2005 a Harvard study revealed that men who have yearly PSA tests are three times less likely to die from prostate cancer than those who do not have annual screenings. It should note again that Prostate cancer does not always signal early stages and sometimes no signals at all, even when the disease metastasizes.
Going to the doctor and getting screened has been one of the battles we fight with men who are not oriented or inclined along this line. I have talked about it extensively on other blogs where the rallying call is for men to get checked. How many of these men are going to say “see I tell you I do not have to go to no doctor” As a result of this poison released in the air. Yes, borrowing from Bob Marley who lamented in one of his songs “many more will have to suffer many more will have to die”. He had also said “Don’t ask me why” But here is another reason why!
I couldn’t agree more with LUGPA as to the irresponsibility of this organization who have come out; so alert and intentioned towards the bad instead of the good. Their efforts could have been better expended in preventative methods, and their obvious big bag of resources could have been better used to study such materials and herbs as Guinea Hen (Petivera Alliacea) and Sour Sop (Graviola) natural cancer fighting agents. They could have joined forces with Doctors and Scientists such as Dr. Henry Lowe of Jamaica who back in 2010 announced he has, Alpha Prostate Formula for the elimination of the disease. And Dr. Lawrence Williams of the Scientific Research Council who has isolated cancer curing properties from the Jamaican Guinea Hen (Petivera Alliacea) weed.
At the end of the day and in the words of Bob Marley again This organization is ‘talking blues” I HOPE THEY CRAWL BACK IN THE HOLE, A SINK HOLE FROM WHENCE THEY CAME. Failure to do so will probably result in them being eclipsed by a wall of deaths, dismay and misery from prostate cancer, by their insidious contribution or non contribution.
